RAI BAHADUR GUJARMAL MODI JI
(9 AUG 1902 – 22 JAN 1976)

Eldest son of Multanimal Modi Ji and Chandi Devi Ji, Seth Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi Ji was a renowned and resolute industrialist. He was a philanthropist, who co-established the Modi Group of Companies and the industrial city of Modinagar in 1933. Gujarmal Modi Ji came from a family of businessmen and traders. Having entrepreneurship and ambition burning bright in him, Young Gujarmal Modi wanted to break out from under his father’s shadow and establish a business of his own. Starting of with a single Sugar mill in 1934, Gujarmal Modi almost single handedly expanded his business to become one of the biggest industrialists in India by the 1960s. He set up some of the finest factories, created an industrial town, generated large scale employment, gave Indian manufacturing new wings and allocated a part of his earnings towards social responsibilities.
He is a rare example of an industrialist in whose time, a township Modinagar was set up and named after him. He had strength of character but displayed vulnerabilities as well. Humility was an integral part of his character.
Rai Bahadur Gujar Mal Modi Ji founded this institution after the name of his wife, Mrs Dayawati Modi Ji. Both of them were eager to raise the standard of education in Modinagar as a result many schools and colleges were founded by them.
